3 Hornet Seniors Qualify for State Wrestling Tourney

Three Big Lake wrestlers advanced to the state tournament after placing first or second in their weight class at the Section 6AA Tournament at Dassel-Cokato over the weekend.

Carson Gellerman (39-0) is the 189-pound section champion for the second straight year. The senior won all four of his matches by tech fall. He beat Isaac Thiele of Sauk Rapids-Rice 21-6. He beat Walker Harris of Foley and Lukas Bohler of Princeton by the same 21-6 margin, then beat Conner Plumski of Albany, 20-5 in the championship match.

Cash Stortz (37-5) took second at 133 pounds and advances for the second straight year. The senior opened with a bye, then pinned Alex Ogle of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 1:27. He followed with a pin of Carter Pesta of Sauk Rapids-Rice at 3:44 before losing to Bennett Kujawa of Becker, 15-5 in the championship match.

Dallas Sibbet (34-12) finished second at 152 pounds. After a bye, he pinned Blake Iverson of Albany at 0:42. He beat Caleb Michels of Howard Lake-Wavery-Winsted, 10-3 before losing by pin to Kaden Nicolas of Becker at 3:17.

Two other Hornets placed in the top five spots in their weight class. Austin Frederickson (24-20) did not advance, but did well with a fourth place finish at 285 pounds. The junior lost his first match, 6-1 to Bryce Norlund of Zimmerman. He came back to pin Taylin Nahouakhong of Sauk Rapids-Rice at 1:33. He beat Mason Corbin of Dassel-Cokato, 9-6, then pinned Willy Thesing of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 5:42. He lost a close 2-1 overtime decision to Kevin Boeke of Princeton in his final match.

Elijah Schaller (23-18) placed fifth at 121 pounds. After a bye, the sophomore beat Simon Brenny of Foley, 12-2. He lost to Cassen Brumm of Annandale-Maple Lake by tech fall, 16-1. He lost a 12-6 decision to Carter Barz of Sauk Rapids-Rice before beating Brenny of Foley a second time, a pin at 1:27.

The state tournament took place Friday (Feb. 28) at Xcel energy center, results next week.
