The Becker girls basketball team pushed its winning streak to eight games with a pair of wins last week to round out the regular season.
Vs. Cardinals
Last Thursday, the team knocked off the Alexandria Cardinals, a Class AAAA team with 19 wins, by a score of 58-46. Becker used a dominant second half, coming back from a four point halftime deficit, to pick up one of its best wins of the season.
“We out-rebounded Alexandria 40-23 to secure the win,” said Head Coach Dan Baird. “We got timely shooting from Juliana Stach, who scored 18 points to go with nine rebounds. She also played amazing defense.”
Rowan Hausmann was also solid for the Bulldogs, scoring 12 points, while Andie Changamire had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Adele Changamire was the fourth Bulldog in double figures with 10 points.
“This was an important win against a high quality team to help prepare us for the Section playoffs,” Baird said.
Vs. Tigers
Last Friday, Becker finished up M8 Conference play with a 79-42 victory over Princeton.
Adele Changamire had a career high 35 points in the win, while adding seven rebounds, as Becker held a 36-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
As a team, Becker was very efficient with only nine turnovers, whereas Princeton had 27.
Andie Changamire added 15 points, eight rebounds and six steals, while Rowan Hausmann added nine points.
The win secured second place in the M8 for the Bulldogs, who finished 13-2 (19-7 overall) and saw its only conference losses come against Class AAAA Monticello.
Becker finished the regular season ranked #8 in the state in Class AAA.
Up Next
This week, the Bulldogs entered Section 5AAA play as the #2 seed and played Annandale at home Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Should the Bulldogs dispatch the Cardinals, they would play Saturday (today) at 1 p.m. against the winner of the Big Lake and St. Francis quarterfinal matchup.
“We had a very nice regular season,” Baird said. “We had big wins over Rock Ridge, Alexandria, Jordan, and two wins over an 18-8 St. Francis team. Our girls are working hard and getting better and it should be a fun playoffs!”
Season
In reviewing the regular season stats, Andie Changamire led the Bulldogs in scoring (18.8 points), rebounding (7.1), and assists (3.8) per game. Adele Changamire was just behind at 17.2 points per game and also led the team with 2.3 steals per game.
Juliana Stach led the team in percentage from beyond the arc, shooting 40%, as well as in efficiency with a 1.75 Value Point System (VPS) rating. The VPS is an advanced statistic designed to measure a player’s overall impact on the game by dividing a player’s positive contributions (points, rebounds, steals, blocks, assists) by their mistakes (missed shots, turnovers, fouls).
Alyse Denne led the team in free throw shooting at 86%.
“As a staff, we are ecstatic with these girls as we have improved in so many areas,” Baird said. “Again, they have worked their tails off and have been extremely coachable. They are so fun to coach!”
