The Becker 5th grade/11U baseball team took home a state championship Aug. 1-3 under the leadership of first-year coach Warren Johnson. Becker beat four teams enroute to the title in the 2014 Rec State Baseball Championships in Brooklyn Park.
Seven of the nine Becker 4 players played in a regular season schedule and finished with a record of 8-4. Heading into the state championships, Johnson pulled in two new players from another Becker team and these kids went on a four game winning streak to take home the crown.
In game one of the tournament, Becker beat the Burnsville Rangers by a score of 12-0. In the second game, Becker went double digits again with a 12-2 win over the Andover Reds.
Game three was a much tighter contest, but Becker prevailed with a 6-3 victory over the Springfield Tigers.
To finish things off, Becker throttled the Burnsville Cardinals, 10-0 in the championship game to win it all.
The Becker 4 team consists of: Ethan Fitch, Bennet Taitge, Dylan Dirchs, Jackson Thorn, Will Thorn, Kenny Foster, Frankie Schapp, Xavier Verthaune and Brandon Kuhn. The team was coached by Johnson, Brock Taitge, Justin Thorn and Kenny Verthaune.
