Lowell Gene “Joe” Mortensen, 85 Monticello, MN January 16, 1940 – April 17, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lowell Gene Mortensen, who passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025, at the    age of 85.  

Lowell was born on January 16, 1940, in Cosmos, Minnesota to Walter and Evelyn Mortensen. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. 

He is preceded in death by his wife Patricia Mortensen; daughter Debbie Bremer; sisters Alyce (Mortenson) Olson, Edith (Mortensen) Minnick, Mary (Mortenson) Raitz; and brothers Stanley Mortenson, Lloyd Mortenson, Richard Mortenson, Carroll Mortensen, Darryl Mortensen, Clifford Mortensen, and Jim Mortensen. Lowell is survived by his son Gregory (Chris) Mortensen; granddaughters Lexi Bremer (Michael Hise), and Anikki May; great-granddaughter Chloe Hise; and Lexi’s father Tony Bremer.  

He dedicated his life to his family and community, volunteering on the Monticello Fire Department, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. He grew up the youngest of 11 siblings on the family farm.  Lowell enlisted in the United States Army in 1959. He married his wife Patricia Valiant on August 26th, 1961. After moving to Monticello, Minnesota, he worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator, then started over the road trucking with his wife. Later he worked for Hoglund Bus Company until retirement. He was loved by all who met him, and he will be missed by many more. 

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM with visitation 1 hour prior on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 440 Lake Street N. in Big Lake. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery in Big Lake. There will be a luncheon served at the church after the interment.
