Walking a Mile in Her Shoes

On Sunday, Rivers of Hope and the Big Lake Police Dept. held their annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. Participants in this event donned women’s shoes and marched for a mile around Big Lake on Lakeshore Drive. The event is held to raise awareness of sexual and violent crime against women. Sunday’s event Raised over $450 for the cause.

According to the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes website, wearing women’s shoes in order to walk a mile offers a way to add levity to an otherwise difficult topic, making it easier to talk about the reality of domestic and sexual abuse.

Rivers of Hope is a Minnesota organization founded in 1989 whose mission is to “promote a community coordinated response to end family violence through advocacy, education and interagency collaboration,” as stated on their Facebook page. They, along with the Big Lake Police, help to organize this event every year.

Participants came from the Big Lake Police Department, Big Lake Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, Big Lake City Council, Big Lake Fire Department, and several other local groups.

Some participants held roses during their walk in honor of Councilwoman Rose Johnson.
