VETERANS DAY ESSAY CONTEST. The 2015 Veterans Day Essay Contest winners from Becker Middle School, sixth-grader Alyssa Oelmann and eighth-grader Reid Krause, are shown here with Becker American Legion member Mark Swanson, who presented each student with a $25 prize for their winning entry.

Veterans Day Essay Winners Named

Two Becker Middle School students were named as the winners in the annual essay contest sponsored by Becker American Legion Post 193 in honor of the observance of Veterans Day every November 11.  The 2015 contest winners were sixth-grader Alyssa Oelmann and eighth-grader Reid Kraus, who each received a $25 prize from the Legion.

An excerpt from Oelmann’s essay includes the following:  “A veteran, while maybe being afraid of what he/she is walking into, will still do it because it will stop bad people from harming the people who live in the country they are fighting for, America”, and that they “do what they do because they believe that it’s the right thing to do”.

In his essay, Krause said that: “Veterans Day, to me at least, is about acknowledging that, without the bravery and devotion of the men and women who have served, and continue to serve each and every one of us, the preservation of this strong, loving nation would be impossible.  In every way, we owe everything to our veterans.”

The complete text of both essays is available in the Middle School section of the Becker School District web site.
