Township Road Maintenance Issues Discussed At Clear Lake

Steve Kiffmeyer approached the Clear Lake Twp. Board of Supervisors during their meeting Tuesday night to discuss maintenance issues on 80th Ave.

He had previously contacted Supervisor Gary Gray about the issue in August, stating the road wasn’t being mowed, and said if the township’s contractor was telling them it had been he was a liar. At that time Gray had advised him to attend a township meeting if he wanted to further discuss the issue.

Kiffmeyer provided the board photographs of the ditch showing it unmowed and full of weeds.

Gray explained the contractor had gone by what his employees had told him had been completed and if he missed the road he accepted full responsibility.

Kiffmeyer said he felt Gray should have inspected the road. Gray responded that none of the board could drive all the township’s roads to see if they’d been plowed or mowed.

“Usually what happens when a complaint is made is that issue will be taken care of,” he said. “I didn’t know the road wasn’t mowed, I was going by what the contractor told me. I can’t change the past, so tell me what you’d like to see going forward.”

Kiffmeyer said he’d been talking to Twp. Treasurer Paul Goenner about what could be done. Gray explained he should call one of the township supervisors instead as roads weren’t Goenner’s responsibility.

Kiffmeyer asked about signs that he’d reported missing a while ago that he’d also spoken with Goenner about. Gray again requested he call one of the supervisors as signs weren’t Goenner’s responsibility either. He assured Kiffmeyer the contractor was aware of them and they would be replaced, however, signs take time to be made and installed.

“For all of our residents, any time there’s a problem pick up the phone or email,” Gray requested. “We can’t be in every spot, so we rely on you to let us know.”

Fill Station

Gray informed the board the easements for the new fire fill station on Co. Road 8 were signed and ready to record.

Kiffmeyer inquired about the cost to put in a driveway for the station; Gray told him engineering estimates are $10,000 to $15,000.

Twp. Engineer Terrance Vander Eyk said due to a policy the county has on highway access points they’re suggesting the ditches be filled in, which the board doesn’t feel is necessary. The extra work would cost around $10,000.

He indicated he would be meeting with the county individual he had received preliminary permission for the project from and would discuss the issue with him. Gray will contact the county if necessary.

Kiffmeyer expressed concern about the heavy rust in the area’s water and how it may affect the fire department’s equipment. Clear Lake Fire Chief Ron Koren informed him the department always flushes their trucks when they’re finished with a call.

Other Business

Kiffmeyer inquired about the township’s policy for stray dogs. Gray informed him residents are asked to call the sheriff, who will then contact a board member who will give them permission to contact the humane society to pick the dog up.

A motion carried approving the bingo permit for Travelers Country Club on the Mississippi.

The sheriff reported 87 calls for service for December, including 38 traffic, 10 medical, one theft of license plates, three accidents including one personal injury and two narcotics arrests.

The next Clear Lake Twp. meeting will be Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
