People in Sherburne County looking to renew their drivers license will have an easier time after the county implements a new system.
Last week, Auditor/ Treasurer Diane Arnold approached the county commissioners about installing a Take-a-number system for the motor vehicle counter at the Government Center.
She said she and others have witnessed long lines for people waiting to get the licenses renewed.
“Some people have waited up to 45 minutes to renew their drivers licence,” she said. “Even though they can sit down sometimes and wait, they don’t want to lose their place in line.”
The problem has been complicated even more since the state began requiring people to upgrade their identification.
“Little did we know when we were in the process of remodeling everything starting in 2015 that Real ID and Enhanced ID would be on the horizon and evolve to the magnitude that it has right now,” said Arnold. “It’s taking a lot longer with all the required documents.”
She said with the help of I.T. Director Brian Kamman, they researched different options to make life easier for their customers.
With the Take-A-Number system, people can get a ticket from a dispenser and not have to stand in line. Now, three LED display monitors will let them know when they are next in line. One display will be located near the drivers license window station. One will be visible from the waiting area and another by the auditor/treasurer’s counter.
“They can see the next number that’s being called,” said Arnold.
The cost for the system, which includes a voice box unit with ticket dispenser, three LED displays and installation, is about $2,360.
“We just want to make sure we have the right system in place for our customers,” said Arnold. “We’re going to give this a try.”
