Students Hear About Safety And Cyber Bullying

Becker Middle School students in seventh and eighth grade were fortunate to recently hear a presentation from Victoria Powell, Assistant Sherburne County Attorney who works in the Juvenile Justice Department.

Powell devotes a great deal of time to speaking to students about making positive choices and how these choices can impact their futures.

She spoke to the seventh graders about several topics, including the effects of bullying on both the victim as well as the bully.

Powell pointed out the consequences of bullying at school, as well as possible legal ramifications. This presentation was intended to help students understand how to take a stand against bullying and support other students.

Powell addressed the eighth graders in regards to internet and social media safety and the issues relating to students sharing information online.  This presentation helped to educate students, keeping them safe both in and out of the school environment as well as understand the consequences and dangers regarding online communications, including cyberbullying.

At the end of her presentations, Powell leaves the students with one final thought, “take a stand and be kind.”  This fits well with the Becker Middle School philosophy of the 3 R's: Respect, Responsibility, and positive Relationships.
