Stearns County Voters Approve Sales Tax Referendum to Fund New Jail and Justice Center

The Stearns County sales tax referendum to fund the construction of a new Jail and Justice Center was approved in yesterday’s election. The measure received strong support from the community, with 62.3% in favor of the sales tax.

The approved three-eighths cent sales tax increase will enable the county to finance a facility that addresses the longstanding issues of overcrowding, safety, outdated infrastructure, and inefficiencies in our current buildings. The new Justice Center will be designed to accommodate growing demands while implementing best practices in corrections and court services.

“Thanks to the residents of Stearns County for recognizing the need for improved public safety infrastructure and the best way to pay for it,” said Michael Williams, County Administrator. “Our focus now is on responsible planning and execution to bring the region a modern, safe, efficient, affordable, and effective justice system.”

Schematic design of the new facility is nearly complete. Commissioners are scheduled to review the schematic design and cost estimates on December 17, 2024.  County staff are also in the process of acquiring land on which to construct the new building. It’s expected construction will begin in late 2025. The sales tax is scheduled to take effect April 1, 2025.

Project updates and timelines will be made available to the public as they are developed. For more information on the justice center and to stay informed of construction updates, visit stearnscountymn.gov/justicecenter.
