COUNTRY SUPERSTAR. Country music legend Sherwin Linton with Pam Linton and "The Cotton Kings" band played three shows the Sherburne County Fair last Sunday, opening with a joyous Gospel program.
GOSPEL HOUR. Pam Linton, Sherwin Linton and fiddler Alex Nyhus were on stage for a Gospel number at the Sherburne County Fair last Sunday in the first of three shows by "The Cotton Kings" band that day.

Sherwin Linton: The Headliner

During Sherwin Linton’s first Sherburne County Fair show with his band The Cotton Kings last Sunday morning, he shared his love of Gospel music with the audience.  While he is “not a preacher,” Linton explained that he enjoyed providing Gospel music to the people in honor of Sunday morning, at times when they may not have been able to get to church.

Linton said:  “It’s special for me to do these Gospel programs because I love the Lord. I will praise him through music no matter how big my audience, and through that, I know the Lord will always lead me in the right direction.”

Linton, his wife and vocalist Pam Linton, and his band, (bass player Pete Brooks, drummer Rick Johnson, and multi-talented fiddler Alex Nyhus) fully engaged their audience with an up-beat Gospel show. Linton joked about the small size of the audience, but, after the band struck up “That Old Time Religion,” the numbers began to grow as passer-by were attracted to the familiar songs being performed.

Other numbers included “Jesus Saved Me,” which Linton had earlier recorded as a duet with Joanne Cash Yates and the first song Linton had ever performed in public, “In the Garden,” which he sang at age 16.   Pam Linton also captivated the audience with her beautiful rendition of “Silver and Gold.”

During an interview after the show, Linton discoursed on many different aspects of art, discussing portraits and sculptures, songs and American literature.

Following the release of his most recent CD, “Highway Headin’ South,” Linton hopes to create an original instrumental, gospel, and speaking album, drawing inspiration from the works of great poets such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Shakespeare, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Traveling the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico, Linton plans to showcase the guitar, harmonica, and piano skills he displayed in his new albums, still an icon to fans of all ages through his unique music.

Clearly, Sherwin Linton has been transformed by his artistic talents into an inspiration, and he is showing no signs of slowing down after 58 years on the stage.
