THE BECKER SCHOOL BOARD met Monday to discuss several topics including stakeholder input, workshop and seminar dates and policy changes, among other items. Supt. Dr. Stephen Malone led most of the meeting’s discussion.

School Board Adopts Policy Amendments, Reviews Stakeholder Input

The Becker School Board discussed upcoming seminars, a future workshop and stakeholder input as part of Monday’s monthly board meeting held at the high school.

Stakeholder Input
The school board discussed potential areas of relevance for the 2017-18 school year based on the stakeholder input.

At the request of the school board, the TRAK committee discussed the school board stakeholder input May 10 relative to mental health services and needs. They recommended more direct services (counselors and social workers) and  expanding the Wellness Center model at the high school to the other buildings.

The history and status of school board goals since 2012 has been compiled and passed out to the board members.  Malone said the goals identified in green are embedded in the operation of the school district and no longer need to be part of the school board goal setting process.

Malone said the critical thinking and creativity surveys were administered to staff members last month. The surveys were revised to include examples and the response rate in the first survey was 49% in comparison to 45% in the revised survey.

Finally, the school board discussed the information provided and identified preliminary goal ideas for the 2016-17 school year.

Workshop Date
Last month, the board asked Malone to survey school board members to find a date of mutual convenience for a school board workshop. He tallied the responses and after reviewing the survey, no date was selected for the month of August due to conflicts in schedules.

Malone plans to poll the members for a date suitable in September.

Consent Agenda
The consent agenda was reviewed and accepted with the exception of the reviewal of student handbooks — which Malone asked to have pulled due to some errors found.
The board also wanted to recognize the Alcoa Foundation for their $25,000 donation to the school’s robotics team.

Policy Approvals
Malone asked the board to review and adopt a revision to the equal employment opportunity policy as well as the equal employment opportunity policy. Both policies’ revisions were adding gender to their lists of protected categories.

Malone also suggested the board adopt the changes to the harassment and violence policy that adds gender to the list of protected categories.

Malone suggested the board have a first reading of the disability nondiscrimination policy to reflect the requirements for the coordinator contact information.

He also suggested a first reading of  the mandated reporting of child neglect or physical or sexual abuse policy to amend the definition of “physical abuse,” add a definition of “report”, and amend the first of the reporting procedures.

Finally, Malone asked for the board to amend the definition of “vulnerable adult”, amend the first of the reporting procedures and add several statutory references and make grammatical corrections to the mandated reporting of maltreatment of vulnerable adults policy.

Seminars
Malone mentioned the MSBA Summer seminar is  on the calendar for Aug. 8 and directed those interested to visit the website (www.mnmsba.org/SummerSeminar) to sign up.
Malone said he will be attending the MDE annual superintendent conference at the same location Aug. 9-10.
