The Santiago Twp. Board met Wednesday and in 25 minutes discussed roads, traffic control and a CUP application from a local citizen.
Tim Adelman appeared before the board to discuss a CUP application he is filing with the county for an out-building on one of the pieces of his property.
Adelman said he has two adjoining properties in the township — one 3.5 acre lot where his home resides, and another 15 acres where he intends to build a pole barn for storage and a shop. Adelman told the board when he contacted the county, the staff there told him he couldn’t build the size storage barn he wanted (40’x100’) on the larger piece of property because that slice of land didn’t have a home established there.
Adelman said when he went to the county to get a building permit, they told him they would allow a smaller-sized shed, but not the 40x100 pole barn he proposed.
Adelman also told the board he intends to build a home on the 15-acre lot sometime in the near future.
So Adelman asked the board to accept his CUP for the smaller shed version, telling them he’ll just add onto it come the time he builds the other homestead.
The board, headed by Chairman Stuart Nelson, reviewed the project and felt it was a sort of injustice for Adelman to not be able to build what he wants on that piece of property. It was suggested they write a brief letter of recommendation to the county explaining their stance on the issue.
Clerk Kathy Woolard quickly drafted a note advising the county that Santiago Twp. would like to see Adelman be allowed to build the 40x100 sized barn on his adjoining property since he has plans to build a home on that lot in the near future.
Sheriff’s Report
Deputy Oaches said his department received 108 calls for service in the month of June for the township. He attributed the high number of calls to traffic patrols who have been actively monitoring the 30mph speed decrease on Co. Rd. 11 entering the town.
Oaches also said the township had two thefts including a truck that was stolen but has since been recovered.
Road Report
Supervisor Dave Jehoich said ditches are being mowed this week and should be done by Saturday. He also said a crack-sealing bid came in from one contractor (Rhodes), but he said another is expected soon from another business. Nelson suggested keeping the received bid sealed and waiting for the other to submit, with the hopes of opening the bids at the next meeting in August.
Jehoich added that crews are grading some roads and picking up some downed trees. Jehoich finished by saying five yards of riprap was placed along 7th Street last Saturday.
