Santiago discusses school speed zone

The Santiago Township Board met last Wednesday, with speed issues on 59th Street again being a point of discussion.

The supervisors discussed the possibility of a school speed zone addition, and Dave Jehoich mentioned that one of the existing speed limit signs was being moved to a more prominent location.  Clerk Kathy Woolard reported back from last meeting and noted that the school and church was originally permitted under a Conditional Use Permit and there are additional enforcement actions available to the township.  The board directed Woolard to follow up with the Sherburne County Attorney’s Office to gather more information.

Sgt. Kevin Grams reported on last month’s 100 calls for service, with traffic enforcement again being a top reason for law enforcement action in the township.  He also reported that he had performed a great deal of extra enforcement on 59th Street and would continue to do so.

Bids were opened for the 67th Street paving project and Knife River was awarded the contract at a cost of $478,390, as their bid beat the competition by about $15,000.  Becker Twp. will next approve the project, which will be done some time this summer.  Becker supervisors Robin Boros and Joe Danielson were at the meeting and indicated that Becker will be using swing-away mail boxes on their side of the road and therefore Santiago made a similar decision.

Matt Weber reported on the Becker Fire Dept. calls for March, which included 10 in Santiago Township, nine medicals and one fire.  He also reported on the efforts of the Santiago Lions to build their storage shed at the park.

The meeting concluded with a reminder about clean-up day, scheduled for April 27 from 8 a.m. until noon at CentraSota.
