Santiago Discusses On Going Road Issues

During their meeting Wednesday night, the Santiago Twp. board of supervisors discussed on-going issues with 67th Street and 7th Street.

Supervisor Dave Jehoich reported the meeting with Becker Twp. in regard to 67th Street didn’t accomplish anything. Although Becker Twp. originally requested the meeting, they now want to leave responsibility for the road as it stands currently. The townships have an agreement to each maintain the road every other year; as of May 1, Becker Twp. has responsibility.

Chairman Stuart Nelson requested it be noted to initiate the conversation again before May 1 of next year so the issue can be addressed.

Contractor John Herbst informed the board a culvert on 7th Street has a hole that has caused water to erode it to the point of creating a hole, which he has been marking with orange safety cones.

Even though the 7th Street ditch is only a short branch ditch, in order for the township to replace the culvert they need approval from the army corps of engineers (ACE), state and county, which is a long, slow process.

The ACE hasn’t maintained the ditches over the years and now they need to be reopened. A discussion was held on helping landowners to do so.

Cleanup Day

Shelley Jehoich informed the board 70 cars came through for cleanup day on Saturday. The board expressed their thanks to her and all the volunteers, Bailey Ray’s for sending over food, and the Lions for picking up mattresses out of the ditch for the township.

Other Business

Jehoich informed the board they’re waiting for Astech to provide updated quotes on crack sealing and seal coating.

A motion carried approving the LG220 application for exempt permit for the Forest Lake Ducks Unlimited Club raffle event at Wild Marsh Shooting Clays.

The sheriff reported 40 calls for service for April, most of which were medical. A discussion was held on what should be done with stray dogs, the township doesn’t currently have a dog ordinance. Options will be brought to the June meeting.

The fire department reported 32 calls for service for April, 10 of which were in Santiago Twp., including seven medical and two fire.

The next Santiago Twp. meeting is June 12 at 7 p.m.
