Routine Agenda At Palmer Twp.

Monday, the Palmer Twp. Board of Supervisors discussed two road setback variances and a conditional use permit (CUP) request.

Lee and Cindy DeJongh requested a road setback variance for their property on 42nd Street. They will be leveling the old house and building a new one. The footprint of the new house is the same as the original except that it will be set back one foot.

Seeing no problems with the request, a motion was carried to send favorable comments to the county.

David and Teresa Zehnder requested a road setback variance for their property on 115th Avenue. They’re replacing an existing porch on their home due to leakage. The new porch will come out 14 feet from the house, eight feet will be an enclosed porch and six feet will be an open porch with an overhand.

Seeing no problems with the request, a motion carried to send favorable comments to the county.

Gordon Hoglund requested a CUP for a personal storage structure to be built on his Sleepy Oaks lot. A motion carried approving the CUP; the board recommended he add a 15’ culvert.

Road Maintenance

A discussion was held on poles that may need to be moved on 54th Street; Supervisor Mike Ganz indicated he didn’t believe the design for the township’s portion of the project are out yet, which is why the issue hasn’t been addressed yet.

A motion carried to replace the culvert on 42nd if it’s able to be done.

As a tractor hasn’t been found yet for mowing the ditches a discussion was held on how long they can wait before they need to be done; ideally the township has them mowed for the first time by July 4. A decision was made to look into other options.

Other Business

Cleanup day in May saw 202 participants, with over 28 tons of solid waste collected, over 10 tons of scrap metal, five and a half tons of tires and nearly three tons of electronics. The township spent $9,967 on the event however, they haven’t received their SCORE grant yet.

The lake association reported it’s currently the fourth high water event of the year and the third no wake. The annual meeting is Aug. 10; officers will be elected and the carp barrier grates at Rush Lake Dam will be discussed.

The sheriff reported 60 calls for service for June, including six traffic resulting in three violations, three property damage, one jet ski complaint on Lake Julia and a theft of a graduation card box.

Sergeant Stangler informed the board deputies have been monitoring 55th Street by the Briggs Lake landing where there have been complaints of speeders; none were identified. He will request an electronic radar sign be placed in the area.

The fire department reported 13 calls for service, four of which were in Palmer Twp., all medical.

The next Palmer Twp. meeting will be Aug. 12 at 7 p.m.
