During their meeting Wednesday night, the Santiago Twp. Board of Supervisors discussed a number of road issues and updates.
John Herbst informed the board that after he graded 7th Street/Co. Road 9, a hole showed up in the middle of it that he discovered was caused by holes in the culvert underneath. He replaced the culvert but indicated there are two more culverts on the road that also need to be replaced for the same reason.
Supervisor Dave Jehoich told the board they had gotten bids in from Astech for crack sealing and sealcoating 62nd Street and town hall. The work on 62nd is a continuation of what wasn’t completed last year. Together the estimates were close to $30,000.
A motion carried approving the bids.
With Co. Road 16 under construction this spring, the township’s minimum maintenance road has been getting a lot of traffic. To keep it passable the township had Herbst add fill and grade it.
Herbst informed the board a customer had asked him to put in a culvert on 41st Street, after which he sold the property. The new owner is asking if the township has a certificate of completion form for him.
The board indicated the original owner should have it; Clerk Kathy Woolard will follow up.
Herbst Excavating’s road maintenance contract with the township will be up at the end of the year; the board will put the contract out for bid with a bid letting at the September meeting. The three-year contract runs from May 1 to April 30 and is for regular road maintenance and snow plowing.
Variance requests
The township received two variance requests for a proposed communication tower; the first for 58’ and the second for 186’. The county states setbacks need to be the height of the tower plus 20’; the proposed tower is 250’.
After a brief discussion it was decided the board wasn’t comfortable with all the variances requested and a motion was made to deny them due to them not meeting the county’s setback requirements.
Other Business
A resident inquired about a beaver bounty; the township doesn’t have one.
The sheriff reported 40 points of contact for June, including four traffic, four security alarms and three medicals.
The fire department reported 36 calls in June; eight in the township. They included eight medicals, one fire and one fire alarm.
The next Santiago Twp. meeting will be Aug. 14 at 7 p.m.
