The words of this country’s National Anthem rang true Monday proclaiming this nation as the Land of the Free because of the Home of the Brave.
Military men and women who died in service to their country were honored during several local Memorial Day events Monday as members of the American Legion made their way from community cemetery to community cemetery.
The Becker American Legion Post 193 and the Sons of the American Legion participated in their usual six services with the final service conducted at the Becker Cemetery. Groups of people stood in solemn honor of those who have died for this country while the Legion members carried the colors into the sites.
Band students from Becker schools were also in attendance at the Becker cemetery to play music while people congregated around the war memorial featuring a flag at half staff. A member of the Green family played taps at the Santiago Cemetery.
A meal was served afterwards at the community center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and poppies were sold for a donation to help support veterans.
