Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), in partnership with the Friends of Sherburne and the Sherburne Photography Club, hosted its 4th Annual K-12 Photography Contest this year.
The contest saw a wonderful turnout with 45 total entries submitted. All the photos submitted captured beautiful and unique perspectives of the refuge and will be displayed at the Oak Savanna Learning Center throughout the winter months. Viewing options include the first three Saturday’s in December (1st, 8th, 15th) from 10 am to 1 pm.
The Eagle’s Nest Nature Store will also be open at this time for holiday shopping. Photos can also be viewed during public events, including the Valentine’s Moonlight Ski & Hike on Saturday, February 16th from 6 pm to 8 pm and the Afternoon Snowshoe on Saturday, February 23rd from 1 pm to 4 pm.
The photos submitted focused on wildlife and scenery and had to be taken at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. Additionally, all photos were taken during daylight hours and in areas open to the public. On November 14th, the winners and all participants were recognized for their outstanding work. First through third place were awarded as well as five honorable mentions.
The first place winner was Lucille Hunter (Zimmerman) for her vivid image of a wasp perched among brightly colored leaves. second and third place were awarded to Adeline Tiggelaar (Zimmerman, MN) and Levi Nicholson (Elk River, MN) respectively. Honorable mentions were awarded to Hannah Hunter, Rhema Knudson, Ian Daly, Katie Gray, and Aurora Schossow.
The refuge would like to thank all of the young photographers for their participation in this year’s contest and for sharing their creative and inspiring images with us.
