Rain No Problem At Travel Plaza Patio Party

A steady rain couldn’t dampen the spirit of those attending the 11th Clearwater Travel Plaza Patio Party Tuesday.

The event drew hundreds of people to the Plaza parking area, and two large tents provided some protection from the rain, which started just about 4 p.m. when the activities began.

The event is a thank-you to employees, customers and veterans, who celebrate the day with free food, entertainment and a chance to get together with friends.

It’s a time when everyone gets together to share a meal of burgers, brats, ice cream and a selection of drinks. Except for the cash bar, all the food and beverages were free.

At 4 p.m., three busloads of veterans from the St. Cloud VA Medical Center arrived, having been escorted by the Clearwater Legion Riders.
When the veterans arrived, they were led down a red carpet flanked by the Clearwater Color Guard. Each was given a standing ovation by the crowd and were greeted with a hug and a thank-you by Travel Plaza Vice President Wendy Johnson.

When it was time for food, the veterans were served first, then everyone else formed lines - in the rain, to get their food.

While the guests ate, there were announcements for purchasing gun raffle tickets and silent auction items. This year’s list of prizes included a drone, barbecue grill, travel bag, golf bag, ladder toss game,  quilt, children’s chair and a mystery bag.

Last year there was a dunk tank. Not this year, though, because everyone was pretty much drenched after the first 30 minutes.

This year, the Travel Plaza and community recognized Chuck Meador, former veteran and annual participant at the patio party, with a flag-folding ceremony. On display for all to see was a bench in his honor made by Eagles Healing Nest. It’s home will be at the Travel Plaza.

At 6 p.m. all the Travel Plaza employees were recognized for their hard work. Terms of service ranged from five years to over 40 years.

The event lasted until 10 p.m., with musical entertainment provided by Radio Nation, a popular Central Minnesota country/rock band.

Although soggy, everyone had a great time, and all proceeds from the day’s activities went to the St. Cloud VA Hospital recreational activities.
