The Becker Fire Dept. wrapped up National Fire Prevention Week by hosting its annual open house last Saturday. Although the day was rainy and cold, the event was well attended by the community.
The theme for this year’s National Fire Prevention Week was “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape!” The campaign’s goal was to celebrate people who learn about, plan and practice home fire escape, as well as stress the importance of doing so.
Firefighters spent time handing out balloons, providing demonstrations and answering questions. On display for guests to check out were fire trucks and some of the department’s equipment, as well as firefighters’ gear lined up along the wall in their lockers. There was also a large display of safety information for people to read and take home with them.
On display were numerous items that had been in fires, like a cell phone and a CD, providing a sobering reminder of what the day was actually all about.
Sparky the Fire Fighting Dog was on hand to greet the kids, hand out balloons and pose for pictures. Kids also had a blast jumping and sliding on a giant inflatable slide and trying on a firefighter’s uniform.
By far the most popular attraction of the day was the fire truck rides, with adults and children standing outside in the cold and wind to wait for their turn to take a spin around town.
When it was time to take a break there were donuts and beverages available.
The only activity put on hold due to the poor weather was the opportunity for kids to get a feel for what it’s like to put out a fire by attempting to blast a target with a fire hose.
The Becker Fire Dept. primarily serves the communities of Becker, Becker Twp. and Santiago Twp.
