July 26 at approximately 2:39 a.m., Officer Tyler Hecht of the Big Lake Police Dept. stopped a vehicle in connection to a driving complaint. Officer Hecht spoke to the driver, Terry Van Guilder, 41 of Columbia Heights, and while doing so, could smell the odor of alcohol emitting from the vehicle. Hecht also observed Van Guilder had bloodshot, watery eyes.
Officer Hecht performed standard field sobriety tests and Van Guilder showed signs of impairment during the three tests. A preliminary breath test was conducted, and Van Guilder was over the legal limit.
Van Guilder was placed under arrest and searched. In Van Guilder’s left pocket, a clear zip lock baggie was located that contained a substance that later field tested positive for methamphetamine. The methamphetamine weighed 2.2 grams. During the vehicle search a methamphetamine pipe was located under the driver’s seat.
Van Guilder’s breath test showed a reading of .07. A Miranda statement was taken where Van Guilder admitted he picked up the bag of methamphetamine yesterday.
Van Guilder was charged by criminal complaint with; Felony 5th Degree Controlled Substance.
