Middle School Serves Up Holiday Variety Show

The Becker Middle School holiday talent show truly had something for everybody as it took the stage in the new BHS Performing Arts Center last Friday morning.  The poets, musicians, singers, dancers, mad unicyclist and on-stage science experiments gone awry made for a grand morning of entertainment that was the perfect start the Christmas break for students and staff alike.

The performance began with an appearance by the Middle School Jazz Band, in appropriate Santa Claus hats and one fake white beard.  Another early musical highlight was a piano number by Becker Schools Supt. Sr. Stephen Malone on the piano.  Malone had played during the lunch hour at all of the district schools in the week leading up to the show, with the talent show as his grand finale for the year.

Bright spots in the show abounded, including a joyous version of The Lumineers song “Hey Ho” by Tom Dickey, Henry Kolstad, Garret Moore, Brady Soderquist and Carter Shampine, complete with cue cards so the audience could provide the “Hey” and “Ho” when required.

The Dazzlers dance team showed up with sequins ablaze as they performed to “Clarity” by Zedd, after which Sarah Warren got the house up with a spirited “Chatterbox Rag” on the piano.  Carly Cory moved them next with the poem “When Things Go Wrong” followed by a display of unicycle skills from Lukas Paulson, a nifty rendition of RaeLynn’s “God Made Girls” by Haley Schwintek.

The program also featured the return of Bella Petit as “Professor Science” with a short-range rubber band air cannon (you had to be there), Alexis Drehml singing “Oceans” after overcoming some technical glitches that prompted a restart, Emma Proefrock with a tap-dance number, Courtney Newst singing and playing the guitar on “Cornerstone” and Hannah Bengtson closing the show playing the piano and singing “How Can It Be?”
