Middle School Holds First Annual Dawg Walk

The Becker Middle School held their first Annual DAWG WALK Walk-A-Thon May 13.

The Walk-A-Thon was held in conjunction with the school’s Wellness Day.  The school has been exploring the idea of a Walk-a-Thon for several years and it came together with help from Joel Heitkamp, a teacher in St. Cloud at South Junior High, the support of the BLEND (Better Living through Exercise, Nutrition, and Diet) organization, as well as Sherburne County.

All students from the middle school were able to participate in this fun day. The students competed grade level versus grade level to see who could raise the most money.

The class with the most money got to spend the entire day at the Walk -A-Thon, which included inflatables, Minute-To-Win-It competitions,  face painting, music, yard games and raffle prizes throughout the day such as bicycles, Fitbits and autographed pictures from the Minnesota Wild, Timberwolves, and Vikings.

Speaker Rick Rassier kicked off the day with an assembly for fifth-through-eighth grade students in which he had the crowd attempting many activities that involved teamwork.

The Walk-A-Thon raised a total of $17,550. All the proceeds will go to the school. The money can be used  for a variety of things that will service the students such as guest speakers, courage retreats, kindness retreats, field trips, student scholarships, books for the media center, apps for iPads, exercise equipment for Phy. Ed., special teacher requested materials and much more.

The organizers would like to say “thank you” to the following sponsors for donating various prizes that were raffled off to students throughout the day: BLEND, Sherburne County Health and Human Resources, Horace Mann, Firebuggz, Starcor, Scheideman Chiropractic, Monticello Culver’s, Becker Community Center, Pebble Creek, Becker High School Football, Lacrosse, Swimming, and Wrestling, Becker Youth Basketball, Becker Youth Sports, Becker Middle School Student Council, Big Lake Dairy Queen, All Star Embroidery, Bulldog Pizza, Powder Ridge, Mueller Theatres, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota Vikings, Middle School Media Center, Becker Food Pride and Steve Whittaker.
