As part of the upcoming Becker Community Center tree lighting ceremony Sunday, BHS junior Morgan Meyer has been working with Community Center Manager Jamie Cassidy and Mayor-Elect Tracy Bertram to inaugurate an annual Remembrance Tree program as part of the tree lighting ceremony.
The Remembrance Tree will be a special tree in the lobby of the community center where people can hang ornaments to remember children that have been lost too soon. Meyer’s Remembrance Tree project is the next phase in her quest to achieve her Girl Scour Gold Award.
Meyer’s project is all about Cystic Fibrosis recognition and awareness, a disease that can often take the life of a child before adulthood. Meyer recognizes that many children leave the world too soon from a multitude of reasons.
“So I would like my project to include all of those lost and to remember them yearly during a time that can be difficult for those families and bring our community together,” she said.
To help those interested in her project, Meyer plans to hold an ornament decorating class leading up to the dedication Sunday night.
“For this first year, I will be hosting a free ornament-making event to make ornaments to hang for free from noon to 5 p.m.,” Meyer said. “Craft's Direct (out of St. Cloud) has been kind enough to donate the ornaments for us and my project funds have paid for the rest of the supplies.”
Meyer says her ornament design opens up so one can put a picture of a loved one inside.
“Then we will have lots of stuff to decorate and make it special for them to hang on the tree,” she said. “Everyone is also welcome to take a picture next to the tree with their ornament before or after the 6 p.m. lighting ceremony.”
Meyer’s ornament-making class will be held in the TBJ room during the BCC Craft Sale. There, she and her supporters will have the supplies for ornaments, coloring sheets, donation envelopes, information on Cystic Fibrosis and she will be available for any and all questions.
“Please come and support Cystic Fibrosis and my gold award Sunday,” Meyer said.
