Becker Faith Lutheran Church held a Maundy Thursday service this week in honor of Holy Week leading up to Easter.
Hundreds piled into the church where a living Last Supper was performed. The “actors” re-enacted the last meal Jesus Christ shared with his disciples and guests learned why each disciple questioned if they would be the one who betrayed their Lord.
Special music was provided by the Faithful Five featuring Tom Keller, Katy Aanenson, Gretchen Blakeney, Mike Johnson and Ruth Johnson.
In the first scene, Jesus addressed his disciples and explained that he is aware of a betrayer amongst them. From there, each new scene depicted a disciple standing in front of the others — explaining who he was and how he came upon following Christ — then each ended their oration with the question, “Is it I?”
Grapple students — a term given to the church’s youth for “grappling” with their faith — began the evening’s proceedings by setting the table with foods from the first century. The foods included parsley, bitter herbs, charoset, shank bone and wine.
The Grapple students included: Collin Aanenson, Brody Bjerga, Emilia Bond, Isabel Elvester, Payton Enerson, Hunter Graftaas, Rylee Gunderson, Denlan Harmoning, Jacob Kragenbring, Madeline Mlenek, Gabriella Pany, Emma Reitan, Sara Remus, Trinity Robinson, Breann Schrader, Abigayle Swanson, Alex Swanson, Carter Tatge, Tucker Tatge, Riley Wilke, Jack Wilson and Jack Wynia.
In between scenes, the Faithful Five sang songs such as From an Upper Room, How Beautiful, He Comes in the Name of the Lord, Is It I?, Remember, Communion Hymn and the Table and finished with O Love How Deep, How Broad, How High.
Jesus was portrayed by Mike Elvester. His disciples were; Ben Pany (Peter), Terry Wilson (Andrew), Joel Erickson (Thaddaeus), Sam Hintermeister (James, Son of Zebedee), Jeremy Dove (Matthew), Mike Tauer (Simon the Zealot), Carter Aanenson (Nathaniel), Eric Graftaas (Phillip), Roy Kollar (James, the Lesser), Brad Bolton (John), Gregg Engdahl (Thomas) and Nathan Oliver (Judas).
