A man died early Wednesday after the vehicle he was driving got stuck on railroad tracks and was hit by a train, according to Sheriff Joel Brott. The vehicle burst into flames after being hit by the train.
The crash happened at about 2:45 a.m. in the 3400 block of Hwy. 10 just north of Clear Lake, according to Brott. Witnesses reported seeing a four-door passenger vehicle stuck on the railroad tracks and the driver rocking back and forth trying to get the vehicle off the tracks.
The vehicle had turned west from Hwy. 10 onto a dirt road that is the driveway to a private residence. There are no stop arms at the railroad crossing on the driveway. As the vehicle passed over the tracks, one of the front tires went off the concrete slab that is part of the railroad crossing and became stuck between the tracks.
The train was traveling west at 50 mph and was unable to stop in time before hitting the vehicle.
The identity of the deceased is Brian John Watson, 39 of St. Cloud.
