Opening night for Becker High School’s production of the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia! is fast approaching!
The musical will be performed at the Performing Arts Center in Becker High School beginning Fri., Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Three other performances will follow, two on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and the final performance on Sun., Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.
Mamma Mia! was written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, featuring the music of the 1970’s Swedish pop band, ABBA. It is the story of bride-to-be Sophia and her Greek island wedding. Sophia invites three men from her mother’s past to her home to try to discover who her true father is so one of them can walk her down the aisle.
The musical was chosen by the students themselves. A survey was conducted and Mamma Mia! was the winner.
“We tried to make the experience student centered because they’re the ones who put the time and energy and effort and talent into it,” said Director Penny Pingrey. “We get to guide them. We get to help them build on their talents, but they’re the ones who are putting in the work. They’re the ones who have to perform so we want to make it their program and we want them to leave a legacy for the people coming up.”
All but two of the 13 kids who make up the Tech Team are first timers. Most of them have been a part of previous high school and middle school performances and have learned what to do from their fellow students. Another 39 students make up the cast. Pingrey said they do it because, “They enjoy performing. They love to be a part of this program.”
Auditions were held August 25 before school began and students have been rehearsing ever since--Monday through Friday from 3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. They also began staying later after MEA weekend. According to Musical Director Gretchen Bordson, about half that time has been spent on the music.
With all that work, Mamma Mia! is sure to be a great experience for everyone. Tickets can be ordered online at https://gofan.co/app/school/MN19531.
