MASTERPIECE. The final touches make the snail truly a work of art.
PAUL LARCOM was busy Wednesday morning spray painting his giant racing snail in his front yard along Sherburne Ave. Paul and his sister Jenny have for years created some of the area’s best snow sculptures and each year.
EACH YEAR the carvings get more and more intricate in detail and craftsmanship.

Larcom Family At It Again: Another Snow Sculpture Masterpiece

For years, the Larcom family of Becker —Jeannine and Dave and their children,  Paul, 22 and Jenny, 25 — have “wowed” drivers along Sherburne Ave. with their incredible snow sculptures and holiday decorations.

This year is no different.

Over the last few weeks, Paul and Jenny have been withstanding the cold, wind and snow and created a snow sculpture being completed this week. The snow carving is of a 12-foot snail that has the eerie resemblance of some new Star Wars creature.

Apparently, it’s the racing snail from the movie, The Neverending Story.

Paul was out Wednesday morning with his colored spray paint cans, putting the finishing touches on the behemoth gastropod. He was asked why he isn’t putting his skills to the test at a large venue like the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

“Several people have actually asked me that same question,” he said.

Over the years, Paul and his sister have sculpted awe-inspiring effigies including a leprechaun and his pot of gold and Han Solo of Star Wars fame frozen in carbonite.

By Wednesday afternoon, however, the warm weather melted away some of the sculpture’s features and moderated the colors. I’m sure when the weather cools down, Paul will be out there mending his magnum opus.
It’s definitely worth a drive-by.
