A Sherburne County Jail inmate was taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon after experiencing a medical emergency, according to Sheriff Joel Brott.
Four jail medical personnel, who are contract clinical staff, were taken to the hospital after at least one reported tingling in their fingers, raising concerns about a possible exposure to opioids, Brott said.
Jail correctional officers were given the option to be seen by medical professionals. Seven were taken to hospitals. The medical personnel and correctional officers all checked out fine and were released.
The inmate remains hospitalized, Brott said. The initial screening indicated that the inmate was not under the influence of any illegal substances, according to Brott. Any other personal medical information about the inmate is prohibited by statute.
A thorough search of the inmate’s cell did not reveal anything unusual or suspicious. The inmate was in a cell by himself.
Keeping opioids out of correctional facilities is a real concern and requires constant vigilance, Brott said. It’s why he supports recently proposed legislation regarding body scanners at correctional facilities.
No further information is expected to be released regarding this incident.
