Local residents gathered at Rejoice Lutheran Church in Clearwater last week for the second annual Honoring Those Who Serve special service, held to honor the men and women who serve the community.
The idea for the service originated last year with Pastor Steve Timm from Rejoice Lutheran Church, who has served as a professional military chaplain and volunteer chaplain for law enforcement and firefighters. He shared the idea with Father Dennis Backer from St. Luke’s Catholic Church and the event was born. Timm and Backer are committed to their churches working together.
Following a soup supper, the colors were posted and attendees sang The Navy Hymn. Timm explained the event was held in May to tie into International Firefighter’s Day, National Police Week, and of course, Memorial Day.
He also shared the reasons behind the event, stating it ties Catholic, Lutheran, community and service members together in a blend of spiritualism and patriotism.
“Anyone who serves the public and who puts on a uniform, they place the needs of the community above their own,” said Timm. “So, we gather here today to say thank you.”
Charity and Jessica Timm gave commemorative readings for International Firefighter’s Day, National Police Week and Memorial Day, and Clearwater resident Boots Skelton played Proud to be an American on harmonica.
“Those who serve are those who are always there,” said Backer. “We expect them to be there when we need them, we take that for granted. These are the people who are running in the opposite direction while we’re running away.”
He reminded attendees the world was a much different place than when most of them had grown up, and asked how many go off to work not sure if they’ll return that night.
“How do we thank these people?” asked Backer. “Those who do so are choosing to do so, giving us a total self-sacrificing gift. It’s only right we honor and acknowledge that.”
“We honor those people who show up, who respond, who have answered the call to serve. Thank you for your service and your continued service.”
Special prayers were read and a blessing given in honor of the military, firefighters, law enforcement and all who serve.
The service concluded with attendees singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
