Sherburne County appears to be in the running for a Google data center worth around $600 million, according to a filing Thursday by Xcel Energy.
Google is looking at the potential of locating a large data center in Becker near the Xcel Energy Sherco power generating facility on roughly 300 acres.
If the project moves forward, it would be one of the largest private economic development projects in the State of Minnesota.
Multiple partners, including Xcel Energy, the City of Becker, Sherburne County, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), and several other stakeholders have been working diligently to demonstrate that Minnesota — specifically the Becker community — is the right home for the project.
Mayor Tracy Bertram said “We are excited that this project would bring significant economic development to Becker, providing new jobs and investment in the community. If the project is approved, the potential capital investment of $600 million and the 2,000 construction jobs created would make this an exceptional project for Becker, Sherburne County and all of Minnesota.”
“We look forward to continuing to work with Google and our partners to make this project a reality.”
