Foster Grandparent Program Announces A Major Change

The Central MN Foster Grandparent Program’s goal is to have volunteers from your community creating intergenerational success stories with children.

They are currently comprised of 175 volunteers in 16 counties assisting children in non-profit settings, e.g. in school, preschool, and Head Start classrooms.

National Service volunteers are under the direction of the Corporation for National and Community Service and Catholic Charities of St. Cloud.

Stacy Lund, Central MN FGP Director says, “The Foster Grandparent Program engages older adults in opportunities to provide mentoring, nurturing, and support to children with special or exceptional needs or who have academic, social, or financial disadvantages.  Foster Grandparents receive a stipend and travel reimbursement enabling them to participate without cost to themselves."

"A significant change in the federal regulations includes a reduction in the minimum service requirement.  Volunteers can now serve a minimum of 260 hours annually. This is a change from the previous requirement of a minimum of 15 hours per week and more in line with what senior volunteers are wanting to commit.”

She goes on to say, “We are hopeful that the new minimum service requirement will attract more senior volunteers. The supportive attention provided by Foster Grandparents promotes positive efforts in developing skills, attitudes, and motivation for change within the children they serve.  In addition to the benefits for the child, the bonds of friendship fostered through the program can enrich the lives of the Foster Grandparents by providing satisfaction and purpose.”

This “minimum hours of service” regulation change opens new doors and brings fresh air to the already successful 53 year-old national service program.  It potentially cuts required service hours in half for Foster Grandparents who work in school/classroom settings.  Many adults, ages 55 and above are searching for rewarding, healthy activities to be involved with.  We also know many are looking for ways to subsidize their fixed incomes.  Our stipend and travel reimbursement are non-taxable and are not considered income by the IRS.  We give paid preservice training to our volunteers, and teachers give them necessary direction, guidance, and support when “on the job”.   The Central MN FGP offers many additional benefits.

According to one volunteer, “Being a Foster Grandparent has changed my life. I have a positive purpose every morning I walk into the school. The helping hand that I can give has made a difference in the children’s lives. Life is full and I am blessed!"
