The Becker band program performed their Spring Pops Concert Monday night in the high school PAC.
Special guest Dr. Stephen Malone was asked to conduct a piece since he started his teaching career as a band director and his tenure as school superintendent was waning.
Under the direction of Craig Vogl, the ninth grade band performed music from the Indiana Jones, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull motion picture, written by John Williams. They also produced a few numbers in association to a few Disney Pixar motion pictures and from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
The high school concert band played Suite from Hamilton before Vogl gave way to Malone to conduct The Music of the Night by Webber/Brown. Student conductor, Bella Pettit, then led the ensemble with Mama Mia!, arranged by Longfield.
The rest of the concert featured the wind ensemble playing highlights from Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther, arranged by Brown and closed it all off with music from The Incredibles, arranged by Jay Babcock.
Awards were also presented Monday which included varsity letters, four-year letters, the Sousa Award and the Director’s Award.
The varsity letter recipients were: Carter Aanenson, Diana Bellefeuille, Raeanna Cota, Maddy Dawson, Shelby Dawson, Sydney Denekamp, Aaron Gregory, Gabrielle Imm, Michelle Johnson, Alex Sandra Jundt, Chris Kardell, Lucas Karel, Austin Kollar, Hunter Malisheski, Kenny Meyer, Bella Pettit, Frank Potter, Anthony Schwarzkopf, Austin Seavert, Michael Stich and Grace Tillman.
The four-year letter winners were: Sydney Denekamp, Michelle Johnson, Kenny Meyer and Austin Seavert.
Letters are earned by participating in non-graded activities in addition to class requirements. Students who letter in band have strong dedication to the program and a love for music that they share by performing in additional groups like jazz band, pit orchestra, honor bands, Memorial Day, pep band and other musical opportunities. Lettering requires a substantial amount of extra time, which is why they are recognized every year.
The Sousa Award went to Michelle Johnson. The award is for a senior wind ensemble member and is selected through a nomination and voting process by ones peers.
The Director’s Award went to Sydney Denekamp and it is given to the student who earns the most letter points throughout the school year.
Cake and refreshments was served after the concert in the high school commons provided by the band boosters.
