Faith Lutheran Church of Becker held their 27th annual Sweetheart Valentine’s Dinner at the Becker Community Center Sunday morning. As usual, the parking lot was filled and guests filed in and out of the gymnasium during the two-hour event.
The event boasts a great meal, raffle prizes and silent auction bidding as well as good, down-home fellowship between church-goers, friends, families and even a few strangers.
Tables were decorated in bright, festive Valentine’s Day colors and many patrons came dressed to the hilt in suits, ties and dresses. Members of the church served turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberries, cole slaw, dinner rolls, pickles and frosted cookies. The 300 or so guests filed into the gymnasium for a small fee of $10 for adults and $3 for children.
Most of the raffle items consisted of gift baskets that peaked many bidders’ interests as people placed their bids. The silent auction featured blankets, sweatshirts, birdhouses, cutting boards, chocolate boxes, Big D’s Pizza Bucks and Subway Restaurant certificates.
Several people came early for the start of the event at 11 a.m. while many people took their time and arrived closer to the 1 p.m. conclusion. FLC also had some youngsters from the church help serve coffee, water and milk and clear tables to prepare for new arrivals.
Pastor Brad Barr has been pastor at FLC for over 15 years. The church's mission statement says, “As God's family, we are inspired by the Holy Spirit to share the joy of Christ's promise of eternal love and inspire others to share the joy too.”
That’s exactly what the church members did for the guests last Sunday in Becker.
Share the joy.
It’s a terrific Valentine’s Day message for all of us.
