Drivers die when 2 minibikes collide

The drivers of two minibikes died late Saturday when they collided on a Sherburne County road, according to Sheriff Joel Brott.

The two were part of a group of four minibikes that was traveling east in the 13200 block of Sherburne Co. Rd. 3 at about 11:10 p.m., Brott said. One of the minibikes sped up and separated from the group. A second minibike sped up as well and also separated from the group.

The drivers of the two minibikes that didn’t speed up then saw the other two minibikes collide.

Investigators believe that the first minibike that sped up eventually turned around to come back to the group and collided head-on with the second minibike that sped up.

The two drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as Jake A. Christen, 28, of Foley, and Derek D. Christen, 30, of Milaca.

Investigators are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
