Dozens Follow Legion On Wet, Cold Memorial Day

The Becker American Legion Post 193 stoutheartedly “weathered” the rain Monday to carry out the tradition of honoring all deceased military men and women on Memorial Day.

The cemetery in Becker was to be their final visit but because of the rain, the proceedings were moved inside the high school to the auditorium where a slide show was playing and the high school band assembled on stage.

Craig Vogl conducted the band to play this nation’s hymns while Legion Commander John Reibel conducted the service. The Legion chaplain then read all the names of the military dead who have come form the area.

Rep. Shane Mekeland traveled with the Becker  Legion honor guard all morning as they visited several cemeteries. One of the first stops was at a bridge over the Elk River where the Legion members placed a wreath to flow down stream — since all rivers make their way to the oceans where so many soldiers are laid to rest.

The Legion and their entourage then traveled to five cemeteries to honor those that had served this great nation. One soldier’s headstone that Mekeland observed was of Edson B. Carpenter, a man who served in the Civil War.

“It is humbling to think about the brave service he and other members of the Armed Forces have provided us,” Mekeland said.

The day concluded with a Memorial Day dinner of turkey or ham at the Becker Community Center. All were welcomed for the early afternoon meal that included all the trimmings, coffee, milk and dessert. The local boy scouts were on hand to help visitors find a table and to serve their needs.

Veterans received the meal at a vastly discounted rate.

“Thanks to all the organizers and attendees who made Memorial Day events in our area a success in honoring the true American heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending us,” said Mekeland.
