Deringer Sworn In As New Wright Co. Sheriff

Wright Co. officially has a new sheriff; Sean Deringer was sworn into office Tuesday, making him the 28th sheriff in the county’s history.

Deringer was sworn into office by Judge Kathleen A. Mottl in a ceremony at the Wright Co. Government Building in Buffalo in front of numerous family, friends, residents and co-workers.

He is taking over for retired Sheriff Joe Hagerty, who held the position since 2011. The race for the open sheriff’s position was close; Deringer won just over 50% of the vote, defeating opponent Mike Kaczmarek 26,823 to 25,679.

After the ceremony Deringer spoke briefly to attendees.

“I’ve worked for three different sheriffs in my career and they all brought different leadership skills to share,” he said. “But the one thing they all had in common was their desire to serve the public.”

“I’m going to tell you that I’m going to be an advocate for the people, an advocate for the employees of the Wright Co. Sheriff’s Office, and a humble public servant,” he continued.

Deringer has worked for the Wright Co. Sheriff’s Office since 1997. With a degree in criminal justice and 22 years of experience in law enforcement, he most recently served as patrol captain for the department.

After being sworn in himself, Deringer took the opportunity to swear in his newly appointed chief deputy, Matt Treichler.

“I truly have such a respect for Matt and the job I know he’s capable of doing,” said Deringer. “And more importantly than that, the trust that I have in his ability to carry out his duties as a faithful public servant.”

He stated he and Treichler share a great deal of personal convictions, and both are committed to being advocates for the community and employees of the sheriff’s office.

“I am completely surrounded by 250 members of the Wright Co. Sheriff’s Office who are dedicated servants and have nothing but the best heart to serve the people of our community,” he said.

After being sworn in, Treichler told the crowd he was honored to be selected for the position and for the faith shown in him.

“I’m honest, I work hard and I’ll tell you the truth,” he said. “Those are the things I can guarantee I’ll do for you.

“Like Sean said, we have some great employees, we couldn’t do this without all of you. We’re here to serve the public, that’s why we exist, but part of our job is to also serve you.”
