The Clearwater Township Board Supervisors has awarded the contract for chip sealing of 160th Street, Evans Ave. and Fillmore Ave. to Astech Inc.
Astech offered two alternatives in its bid, either two layers of Grade FA-3 at $126,150 or FA-3 on the first layer and FA-2 on the second layer for a total cost of $109,125.
In Minnesota, the gradation of seal coat aggregate is referred to as either FA-1, 2 or 3. The larger the number, the larger the aggregate. FA stands for Fine Aggregate. The most commonly used sizes are FA-2 and FA-3. An FA-2 consists mainly of particles smaller than 1/4 inch. An FA-3 consists mainly of the chips smaller than 3/8 inch.
Astech was the only bidder, but members of the board felt the price was good enough to award the bid. During a discussion about road projects at the October meeting, the board estimated the project at about $160,000.
The board directed Maintenance Supervisor Mike Ludenia to speak with Astech about the most appropriate grade to use on the roads.
