County Pushing To Expand Broadband

One of the county’s initiatives in its new strategic plan is to expand broadband service throughout Sherburne County.

In July, with the help of the Blandin Foundation, the county distributed a survey to businesses asking them about their current Internet services. The results of the survey indicated Sherburne County has many areas that are unserviced or underserviced when it comes to high speed Internet. Some businesses said they feel they are at a disadvantage because of slow Internet speed.

Tuesday, the county board took one step towards improving Internet service by signing a letter of support for a local company that is seeking funding for infastructure expansion.

“Palmer Wireless will be applying for a portion of the $20 million Border to Border Broadband Development grant that was provided during this year’s legislative session,” Economic Development Specialist Dan Weber told the board. “They’re looking for a resolution of support and a letter of support.”

Administrator Steve Taylor said the company is already doing business in the county. The company was formed in 2006 and has been a growing presence in the Palmer, Clear Lake, Becker and Foley communities.

“They’re looking at not only the state but also the federal government in order to build out some additional infrastructure in the county and surrounding counties as well,” he said. “They are a local firm serving several of our cities. I think this is a great resolution of support.”

Weber said the company is not asking the county for any financial support. But one of their goals is to  expand service from the Becker Industrial Park on Co. Rd. 8 all the way to Oak Park in Duelm in Benton County.”

The board was unanimous in its support.

Ditch Improvements
The board awarded the contract to replace 900 feet of tile line on County Ditch 31 to Kasper Excavating at $5,057. Other bidders for the project were Superior Services at $9,794 and Herbst Excavating at $14,580.

Arts Alliance
The board approved an agreement between the Sherburne County and the Elk River Arts Alliance, a non-profit organization that periodically coordinates exhibits at the Government Center. The agreement outlines the responsibility of the county and the alliance for the exhibits, including pieces displayed, wight and size restrictions and insurance liability.
