In a quick, 14-minute meeting Tuesday, the Becker City Council (minus two members) discussed committee reports, the consent agenda and received a presentation on the city’s new branding direction.
Branding
Community Development Director Marie Pflipsen said the city’s rebranding efforts is nearing completion. Pflipsen even donned a medium grey polo shirt with the new branded logo as well as Councilmembers Rick Hendrickson and Troy Cox. Mayor Tracy Bertram was not in her new shirt and members Mike Doering and Todd Hanrahan were absent from the meeting.
CA Greg Pruszinske was also not in attendance.
Months ago the city asked for the public’s help in submitting ideas for branding a new motto for the city. The unanimous choice was It’s Better in Becker.
Pflipsen noted that in the previous City of Becker logo, an image of the State of Minnesota was displayed below the wording and below a graphic of a leaf. The branding agency incorporated a stylized outline of the state into a “k” and wrapped a half circle around the proximity of the City of Becker to form a “c”. Those two letters formed together make the middle of the word, Becker and thus the new logo was birthed.
Pflipsen said the word, “Becker” was stylized with icons emerging from the “k” for each department at the city. For instance, a dollar bill emerges from the “k” above the word, Becker to symbolize the finance department. A flagstick and set of golf clubs from the “k” indicate the golf course and a fire hose and fire hydrant from the “k” represent the fire department.
Besides the new shirts, Pflipsen said the city is working to have new brochures for the various departments made up portraying the new logos. Also, new bike trail signs will be developed as well as business cards for city employees. The city’s website has already started integrating the new branding scheme.
Committee Reports
Hendrickson updated council and the public on two meetings he attended last week. The meetings were for budget and finance and joint planning board. Cox updated everyone on parks & rec and Mayor Bertram on the fire board.
Consent Agenda
With Pruszinske away, Police Chief Brent Baloun gave the consent report.
In the report, Baloun noted four hiring and termination reports for the police department, administration, the BCC and Pebble Creek. He also mentioned the Becker Lions asked for a temporary liquor license for their annual fish fry this month.
Baloun noted the consent agenda included a 2019-20 workers’ compensation description update and three resolutions — one for the 2020 census, one for a roof replacement in the industrial headworks building and one for the sale of property to facilitate the construction of a Dollar General store.
Anniversary
Pflipsen was recognized for her three years of service to the city.
