It’s been an institution for over 100 years, but misconceptions about the American Legion continue to this day, often discouraging veterans from joining the organization. Here are four common misconceptions about the Legion, as well as the truths behind them.
American Legion Misconception #1: “Only men can join the Legion.”
Reality: All veterans, including women, can become a member of the American Legion.
American Legion Misconception #2: “The Legion is just a bar.”
Reality: Although some Legions operate bars, the organization is much more than that, with Legion members supporting and serving veterans, youth and their communities through fundraising and volunteerism.
American Legion Misconception #3: “The Legion is just a bunch of old guys.”
Reality: Legion members include veterans of all ages, from 20 years old and up.
American Legion Misconception #4: “You had to have seen active duty to be a veteran.”
Reality: Anyone who takes the oath and serves, even during peace time, is a veteran.
These and other misconceptions can mean the difference between a veteran deciding to join the American Legion or not. All veterans are welcome and encouraged to contact their local organization for the true benefits of membership, which go far beyond what can be seen on the surface. Learn the truth and share it with others.
