Nelson died Monday at the St. Cloud Hospital from injuries suffered that evening in a two-car crash on West Division Street in Waite Park. Time of the accident was 7:15 p.m.

Nelson was accompanying a 61-year-old Gransburg, WI man, Richard Tomlinson, at the time of the accident.

Tomlinson was test driving Nelson’s 1970’s Chevrolet El Camino on West Division Street when they were hit head-on near the intersection of 4th Avenue South by a 28-year-old man driving west in the eastbound lanes.

Driver of the second car was Charlie Barnett, 28, no address given. He was reported as having been driving at a high rate of speed westerly on eastbound Division.

Each vehicle received heavy front end damage from the crash.

Tomlinson was killed at the scene. Nelson was taken to St. Cloud Hospital, where he later died from injuries in the crash.

Barnett is under police guard at St. Cloud Hospital, facing several charges in the accident. Each vehicular homicide charge has a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a $20,000 fine.

The vehicle Barnett was driving was reported taken from the home of a St. Cloud woman, with whom he had had a relationship in the past.
