Clearwater Lions donate $26,000 to local organizations

The Clearwater Lions ended 2021 doing what they do best – donating money in support of the local community, this time to the Clearwater Fire Dept. and Salvation Army Red Kettle.

Lion Gary Kalla, Lion President Al Zabinski, Lion Marlene Kalla and Lion Mary Abraham presented a check for $25,000 to the Clearwater Fire Dept. that will be put toward new SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) equipment for the firefighters.

SCBAs are a critical component in the protective gear used by firefighters. They consist of a high-pressure tank, pressure regulator, and inhalation connection (mouthpiece, mouth mask, or face mask) connected together and mounted to a carrying frame.

Fire Chief Ryan Pridgeon explained the department spent two years researching the gear; they’re now waiting to see if they’ve been awarded a FEMA grant before deciding when they’ll order it. The goal is to purchase 18 sets.

The Lions also donated $1,000 to the Clearwater Salvation Army Red Kettle in December.

It’s not all work for Lion members. During their annual Lions Christmas Party this year, singing legend Elvis Presley (Impersonator Todd Anderson) stopped by to entertain the group and spread good cheer with singing, dancing, and merriment.

The largest service organization in the world, Lions Club International’s mission is “to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs.”
