The Clearwater Area Friends of the Library group (CAFOL) held their annual meeting Wednesday evening, reviewing recent events, discussing upcoming business and electing officers.
Friends of the Library (Friends) groups are nonprofit organizations that support community libraries. Although each group is different, their goals are the same; to raise funds, assist with services, and increase awareness. All money raised by Friends groups stays at their local branch.
Librarian Cyrene Bastian updated the group on recent and future happenings at the library, including upcoming programs, Great River Regional Library’s (GRRL) annual report and the current Locally Growin’ fundraiser.
She informed members a new Clearwater Area History group would be meeting at the library each month, and that the library would have a booth at the upcoming Explore Clearwater/Clear Lake Business Expo on May 5. CAFOL will also be participating.
Upcoming fundraisers and recruitment ideas were discussed, and the possibility of adding a handicapped door to the library was raised. Because of the building’s age, one isn’t required by code.
Members agreed a handicapped door would be beneficial, however the cost to install one is high. Options such as an intercom or bell were discussed as well as the possibility of approaching local organizations to help with costs. Information will continue to be gathered and updates given at the next meeting.
Mary Torgersen was nominated and reelected president, Penny Leuthard was nominated and reelected secretary.
CAFOL is always looking for new members and volunteers. Information can be found at the Clearwater Library or by attending one of their meetings, which are held the second Wednesday of the month. CAFOL’s mission is “To support and enhance the programs, services and facilities of the Clearwater Library.”
The Becker Library, located in the Becker Community Center, also has an active Friends group.
CAFOL is also always looking for donations of gently used books, movies and CDs to sell at the Chapter Two Bookstore located in the back of the Clearwater Library and at other fundraisers throughout the year. Books can be dropped off at the library during open hours.
The next CAFOL meeting will be May 14 at 6:30 p.m. Everyone interested in supporting the Clearwater Library is invited to attend.
