A crowd of about 50 enjoyed a musical Sunday afternoon at Rejoice Lutheran Church as the Clearwater Community Choir performed its 2017 spring concert.
The talented group of singers has put on a number of shows based on popular Broadway musicals.
But Sunday’s theme was all about movies.
“Movie Magic” was the name of the show, and the singers performed a dozen songs everyone in the audience recognized.
The show started with one of the most popular songs from the 1950s, Singin’ in the Rain, made famous by Gene Kelly in the movie of the same name.
More famous songs followed: - from the musical comedy Fantastiks, On a Clear Day from the 1970 film adaptation, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.
Then came the popular number by Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz - Somewhere over the Rainbow sung by the Silver Quartet, Carol Mason and Marcia Super.
The community choir also featured two of its newest members, the husband and wife duet of Melanie and Steve Minkler. Melanie played the flute, accompanied by Steve on the piano performing Ashokan Farewell, the song used as the theme of the Civil War documentary by Ken Burns.
Bob Peterson sang Wand’rin’ Star from Paint Your Wagon.
Steve Minkler and Clearwater’s Ralph Johansen played three different songs as a piano duet: the theme from Star Wars, Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter and Chariots of Fire.
The Women’s Quartet of Carol Mason, Marcia Super, Maureen Barthelemy and Leanne Walsh-Becker performed Sun Rise Sun Set from Fiddler on the Roof.
Other songs performed by the entire choir included the theme from Magnificent 7, “Mr. Mistiffelees” from Cats, They Call the Wind Maria from Paint Your Wagon and The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha.
The show was directed by Roger Towler, now in his sixth year with the Clearwater Community Choir. Towler, a semi-professional baritone, also performed a solo - I’ve got plenty of Nothing from Porgy and Bess.
