Clearview’s Family Math Night Makes Math Fun

There was a great turnout for Clearview Elementary’s first Family Math Night Oct. 13, with students and their families filling the school’s cafeteria to learn games that help make math fun.

Retired District 742 teacher Mary Dank, who created most of the games the families were introduced to, led the event. Fifth grade teacher Andrea Coulter, who was looking for something fun parents could bring home to support their kids, helped organize the evening.

Several teachers were also on hand to assist, and Tech High School National Honor Society student volunteers offered daycare for kids too young to play the games.

After enjoying pizza, each family was given a math kit containing items in which to play the games, which included a deck of cards, dice and instructions. Math mats to play them on were waiting at the tables.

Chuya attended with her daughter, Mari Linda. “I thought it would be good to have an idea of what math games to play to help teach her,” she said.

Parents Mike and Monica attended the event with their daughters, Becky and Claudia. Claudia really likes math, so having had fun at other Clearview activities, they decided to try Math Night.

Attendees were able to take everything home after the event in order to continue playing the games with their families. As they left they were given a packet explaining numerous other math activities they could also play as a family.

“It was the first event we’ve gone to here at Clearview,” said Dana, who has a third and fourth grader at the school. ‘We had fun.”

“Clearview consistently puts on events that are beneficial,” said third grade parent, Taylor.

Family Math Night was sponsored by the PTA.  Clearview’s student council paid for and assembled the math boxes, and Clearview provided the refreshments.
