It was a full house of family and staff as 68 fifth-graders graduated from Clearview Elementary School Thursday.

After Principal Sheri Rutar welcomed the crowd, a representative from each fifth-grade class read their school reflections, focusing on favorite memories and the kindness of teachers.

“Life is precious and little things do count,” said Jasmine D., representing Mrs. Clymer’s class.

Peyton J. from Profesora Maria’s class thanked her teachers for pushing her to do her best, and Sam B., representing Profesora Jourdan’s class, ended his reflection by saying, “It’s going to be scary going forward in life, but we fifth-graders can do it.”

Special guest speaker Joel Hietkamp, South Jr. High assistant principal, talked about getting involved, explaining to the graduating fifth-graders that doing so will help them be more successful in middle school.

“My number one goal for you is to find something you love to do outside of school but still be a part of your school community,” he said. “We want you to really really strive to find the thing you love and then make friends to share it with.”

He told them about a children’s book he keeps in his office written by Coach John Wooden called Inch and Miles, the Journey to Success, and ended with a quote by Wooden, explaining that success is being the best you can be.

The fifth-graders were presented their diplomas by their teachers and the orchestra entertained the crowd with two selections, Postcards from the Loire Valley and Boil Them Cabbages Down.

A slide show compiled by Profesora Jourdan of the students’ fifth-grade year was shown, after which they filed out to What a Wonderful World.

Following the recessional, the new graduates paraded through the hallways of Clearview for the last time so students, teachers and staff could wish them farewell and good luck.

A reception was held following the ceremony during which attendees could view the fifth-graders’ memory board they created highlighting their time at Clearview.
