Workers were kept busy two weekends ago during Becker City/Twp.’s annual clean-up day.
Extremely long lines lined 2nd St. SE, waiting to drive into the Maintenance Dept. grounds to unload their vehicles, truck beds, trailers and trunks.
The weather was ideal for most of Saturday’s event, giving residents ample time the morning of and the night before to pack up their trucks and trailers for the big event. Many people clean out their basements and garages to get rid of items standard garbage collectors do not take or they can’t sell at garage sales.
Some vehicles lined up on the roads by 6:30 a.m. for an 8 a.m. opening. Finance Director Connie Robinson and Deputy Clerk Marilyn Danielson welcomed people to the site and directed them to the appropriate collectors. Tanya Danielson and her son Taran stood in the streets to check in vehicles. Air-conditioners, TVs, mattresses, furniture and computer equipment were popular items brought in for the six-hour event. Auto batteries, LP tanks, scrap metal, used oil, household batteries, eyeglasses, printer cartridges, cell phones and hearing aids were accepted for no charge. One passenger tire off the rim was also accepted at no charge, other wise it was $3-$5 each. Commercial and tractor tires were more expensive.
Drop off for hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, bug sprays, etc.) were to be dropped off the following Monday at the same location.
