Bryce Roelike held his annual “Cancer Sucks” garage sale the weekend of June 1, 2 and 3. It was once again held at the Becker Legion (old fire department) off Hancock Street.
Over the last several years, 10-year-old Bryce has devoted his time, energy and talents to holding a special garage sale for all the people in his life who have been affected by cancer. Those close to Bryce have been his mom (survivor), his aunt (deceased) and most recently his grandmother, Donna, who passed away from lung cancer April 20. Donna was a three-time cancer survivor.
Bryce’s goal this year was to bring in around $4,200, so he is more than pleased with the success of his sale. With the total at $4,452 as of this week and more donations coming in, Bryce looked to easily exceed the five grand mark.
Earlier this week he did just that. Bryce met with the Monticello VFW in which the organization donated $800 towards Bryce’s cause. That put the total at $5,252. All proceeds from this year’s sales will be going directly to St. Jude’s for cancer research and treatment.
In Bryce’s first year of hosting a sale, he tallied a total of $4,150. All the proceeds went directly to the local American Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraising organization.
Last year, Bryce raised $4,001, getting big donations from the Monticello VFW and the Men’s and Women’s Auxiliaries.
Bryce sends his sincerest “thank you” to all who have made his project such a success over the years and hopes people continue to support his — and others — goals to capture a cure for cancer.
